Stover-Chapter 1

I chose this advertisement because I think it is very upfront with the message it’s trying to convey. It almost makes me feel bad just looking at it because it’s guilt tricking me by saying let’s get ice cream after we lose all feeling in our body because ice cream makes everything better. I also think it does a good job drastically changing the mood between the first two lines of text and the last. At first you read, let’s get ice cream, and my brain is happy. But then everything changes in a split second when it says, after you paralyze us. It’s just a slap to the face.

In contrast to this image, the first is much more effective in getting the point across. This billboard is clever in the sense that it plays off of the famous Uncle Sam poster, but I don’t think this approach is effective for spreading the message. I think it’s curious that the man is coming out of what looks like a wave of beer, yet it’s talking about reckless driving and not even drunk driving. In addition, I don’t think there should be a man smiling on the cover of a reckless driving ad; it should be somber like the first. The first image also shows no face, just the hands and neck. I like this approach because it leaves your mind to place a face you know into the picture, which makes it even more serious since you don’t want to hurt friends.
