Emily Iammarino - Chapter 5

In chapter 5 the section on visual metaphors caught my interest the most. Visual metaphors are commonly used in advertising (like in the Ayotte drum ads) because they can simply get a message across to the audience without having to use much copy. Also the visual can create a much more concrete meaning which may not have been possible just through words. A popular ad that is known for it's easy/quick use of a visual metaphor is the Sony Noise-Canceling headphones advertisements. In the advertisements is shows various "stereotypically noisy people" who you may run into on an airplane. So these people's heads are replaced with loud speakers to show that they are extremely loud. In contrast to these noisy people there is a peacefully sound person who is using the product with a smile on their face because they cannot hear the noises due to the effective headphones. Overall it's a good metaphor because it's easy to understand and quickly gets the message across, but it could be better in terms of going deeper in meaning; like we see in other visual metaphor examples.
